GDC 2024 is thrilled to announce the return of #1ReasonToBe. Organized by Laia Bee, Pincer Games co-founder and president of the Uruguayan Gamedev Association, this session is a rapid, fun microtalk-style celebration and exploration of what it means to be a woman in games—with this year's iteration focusing on the experiences of game developers in emerging territories around the world. Each panelist will share their story, highs and lows, and explore a vision for a future industry that is inclusive for all.

"I’m so excited to carry forward the legacy of one of GDC's most impactful diversity panels—which was initially initiated by the legendary Brenda Romero and Leigh Alexander, and later carried on by Rami Ismail," Bee said in a statement. "#1ReasonToBe will showcase women from emerging territories across the globe, engaging in candid conversations about game development within their respective and unique point of views. It holds the power to broaden the horizons of our industry and the global challenges we confront. By providing insights into the often-overlooked realities and cultures, the panel sheds light on dimensions that are not conventionally visible."

As part of our dedication to every aspect of the game industry, GDC sessions will explore topics ranging from nostalgic classic game postmortems all the way to the future of game technology and workplace practices. In "AI-Assisted Player Support in the Among Us VR Community," Laura Norwicke Hall will share how Schell Games used in-game features, AI-based tools, and human moderation to keep players safe. Rachel Kowert will dive into how companies can better address player toxicity—a topic that over 90% of developers agreed was a problem in the 2023 State of the Game Industry survey—in the talk "ROI on T&S: Toxicity and the Bottom Line."

We're also excited to host "Occupational Burnout in Games 2024: Causes, Impact, and Solutions," the latest iteration of a popular talk from GDC 2023 about how game developers can better identify burnout in their lives and careers, and gain tools to advocate for themselves in the workplace.

Game devs and industry experts who attend GDC 2024 can expect the return of many activities and events that make the Game Developers Conference the place to be for game developers—including interactive spaces situated throughout the convention center. Attendees can tour the GDC Expo to check out companies’ latest products and solutions, head to the GDC Play area to try the newest indie sensations before they come out, attend career development talks about networking and building your portfolio, and so much more. In addition, the Independent Games Festival and the Game Developers Choice Awards will take place live at the Moscone Convention Center on Wednesday, March 20, 2024—with a simultaneous broadcast in the event app and on the GDC Twitch channel.

We can’t wait for people to meet new friends and business partners, have inspiring conversations in the hallways, find new opportunities, partners, and ideas that will add to their career in game development and help make their mark on the industry.

The Game Developers Conference remains focused on your health and safety. GDC is dedicated to creating a safe space for all, and supporting underrepresented voices in the industry through a variety of programs and partnerships, many of which include free or discounted passes.
